Obituary of Lillian G. McCormick
Lillian A. McCormick, 93, of Iowa City, formerly of Burlington, Iowa died Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville.
Lillian was born April 23, 1920, in Quincy, IL the daughter of George and Lillian (Niehaus) Slater. She attended schools in Quincy graduating from high school there in 1937. She continued living in Quincy for a number of years when she met and married her husband, Richard Gaines. Following his death she married Lloyd McCormick. She left Quincy, to live in Hannibal, MO for a short time, and then moved to Burlington where she lived over 50 years before moving to Iowa City.
In Burlington, she worked for National Research Bureau for 23 years before retiring in 1983. She had a lifetime passion of music, playing as the church organist for her church in Burlington for years while also singing in that choir and numerous other community choirs. She was a member of Eastern Star and member and former president of Altrusa Club both of Burlington. She volunteered as a Pen Pal for the schools in Burlington and Iowa City and she so enjoyed sharing her time and love with the children and families of the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City while living here.
Her family includes her children, Linda Ciolek (Dorian) of Pinedale, WY; Ed Gaines of Iowa City; and Barbara Duncan (Steve) of Solon; 3 grandchildren, Sarah Knight (Chris), Daniel Ciolek, Betsy Hendrickson (Curtis); 3 great-grandchildren, Logan Hendrickson, Austin Knight, and Gable Knight; Lillian's sister, Irene Donhardt of Normal, IL and her brother, Bill Slater (Helen) of Quincy, IL; and a number of nieces and nephews
Lillian was preceded in death by her husbands, and 4 sisters and a brother.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with a reception to follow for family and friends. Graveside services will be held at 3pm that day at the Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Additional information and condolences can be found on the funeral home website @ www.gayandciha.com.
