Obituary of Freeman Detweiler

Freeman Detweiler, 81 of Iowa City went home to be with his Lord on July 1, 2017.  He has been reunited with the many family and friends who went before him.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Monday, July 3, 2017, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service with Military Honors be provided at the conclusion of services.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Monday. 


Freeman was born August 5, 1935 in Thomas, OK, the son of John and Fannie (Miller) Detweiler.  He was one of fourteen children growing up in their Mennonite home. 
In 1954 Freeman enlisted in the United States Army, serving in Korea, Germany (three tours), the Pentagon, and several other U.S. locations.  In 1981, after 27 faithful years of service, Freeman was honorably discharged with the rank of E7 Staff Sgt. 1st Class. 

After retiring, Freeman carried mail for the U.S. Postal Service, and rounded out his career painting for his brother Ivan, of Detweiler Painting.  Those who knew Freeman knew of his love and dedication to his family and friends, and his love for fishing and traveling.  He enjoyed spending winters in Texas, spring in the Ozarks, and summers with many wonderful friends at his 2nd home in Sleepy Hollow Campground, Marquette/McGregor, Iowa.  Freeman was also a life member of the American Legion.

His surviving family include his sisters Cora White, Susan Stutzman; brother Irvin; 46 nieces and nephews, good friend “Mailman Dan”, and three very special people he considered family: Roxanne and Dave Altemeier, and their daughter, Emma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Elmer, John, LeRoy, Melvin, and Ivan; and sisters, Alice, Mary, Sally, Jane, and Pearl.

The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics for their excellent and compassionate care during Freeman’s stay.
