Joye and I had a lot of great adventures in the late 70s to the mid 80s. We went on trips with the Iowa Mountaineers, backpacked with friends and with Sierra Club, canoed in Iowa, Missouri, and Arkansas, and even cross-country skied together a few times in the 80s.
We connected up again when the League of Women Voters had an event at Ashton House, and I asked her to come and talk about the house and the building of it. Joye did so and everyone really enjoyed her talk.
I remember visiting Joye and Mac in 1993 when they had the opportunity to canoe in their basement when the Army Corps of Engineers inadvertently let water out of the dam. Fortunately Ned had anticipated such an event and had built the furnace about 18 inches above the basement floor.
We had coffee together occasionally for a time, but then she reconnected with a former boyfriend and didn't seem to spend much time in Iowa City. I think this period was a very happy one for her.
I enjoyed writing this and enjoyed thinking about the fun times we had.
