Obituary of Leonard Brcka
Leonard R. Brcka, 99, of Iowa City, died Friday, May 17, 2019, at the Briarwood Care Center in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held 10am Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Steven Witt officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the church. (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for the streets near the church) In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Leonard’s memory to Regina Foundation or the University of Iowa Foundation. Leonard Raymond Brcka was born November 11, 1919 in Britt, Iowa, son of John G. and Emily (Kulas) Brcka. Following graduation from Britt High School, he attended and later received his degree from the College of Business at the University of Iowa. During World War II, Leonard served for 3 ½ years in the United States Navy. He married Lorna Stott on March 8, 1943. They were parents of three children: David, Carolyn, and Gary. Lorna died January 16, 1976. On January 12, 1980 Leonard married Velma Miller in Iowa City. Velma died on May 25, 2015.
For many years, Leonard was employed by the University of Iowa serving as manager of Date Processing, Manager of the University Business Office and later as the Comptroller and University Secretary until he retired in 1983.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, where he served on the Parish Council, Knights of Columbus, Regina Boosters, Regina Foundation; had served on the boards for United Fund, Babe Ruth Baseball, and the Boy Scouts. Leonard enjoyed golf, bridge, dancing, playing music with various dance bands and concert bands. He was a big fan of the Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals.
His family includes his children, David J. Brcka (Rita), Carolyn F. Schelling (Warren) and Gary D. Brcka; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a brother, Clarence J. Brcka.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, wives, Lorna & Velma; brother, George L. Brcka; sister, Doris M. Chesshir; grandson, Bobby Schelling and daughter-in-law, Judy Brcka.
