Jonathan D. Cryer
1939 - 2019
Condolences
Judy and family, Jon was a huge influence in my life as a statistics graduate student, and I enjoyed seeing him occasionally at the Joint Statistics Meetings after I left Iowa City. When I was in Iowa City, I really enjoyed hearing him play with Pete Trotter and others. He was a remarkable man, and I will never forget him or how he helped me on my path of becoming a professional academic biostatistician. I'm sorry that I only now learned of his passing...

My announcement made to the audience at the Englert Theater prior to the start of the New Horizons and Iowa City Community Band concerts last Sunday. John Cryer was an amazing musician - a consummate performer on euphonium in the concert band and brass ensembles, and the string bass player for numerous jazz ensembles. He was also a fine singer who could be found performing in Iowa City musical theater productions and the Methodist Church choir. But more than all of these talents, John was a beautiful human being - a gentle, loving, sensitive soul who will be missed by all. John played a concert with us on Tuesday and died on Wednesday. In my estimation, this is just one more example of his life very well lived. If given the choice, I believe that most of us in the band would choose the "play right up to the very end" option. To the memory of this very fine musician and friend, we dedicate today's program.

I first meet Jon in the choir of First United Methodist Church. He was friendly and welcoming and funny. Always had a kind word or witty humor to share. I loved watching him play his bass. Our paths crossed often in the music world. I was proud to know him and call him my friend. He will be missed. My condolences to his friends and family. Rest In Peace, Jon.
My condolences to all of you. I knew Jon for a short time due to the New Horizons Organization. His presence as the heart and soul of the rhythm section in the Silver Swing Band always made our rehearsals productive. My last performance with him featured a bass solo on Mingus' "Better Git Hit In Your Soul." I can think of no other memory that captures the warmth, kindness, and musicality of Jon. May he rest in peace and may you find comfort in this difficult time.
Jon, may you find peace after three years of enduring so much. I doubt I will ever adjust to not having you beside me in New Horizons Band. In closing, greet all the departed music greats that are with you on the other side, particularly The Four Freshmen, the Hi-Los, Stan Kenton, Maynard . . . Goodbye my dear friend. Lyndon Crist
Roommate as a freshman, fraternity brother, fellow jazz fan and math major, longtime correspondent about music of all kinds and politics, and many more memories than may be shared here. Mary and I will treasure the memories.

We were sorry to hear of Jon's passing. We will miss his marvelous bass playing at the Iowa City Jazz Festival. Our thoughts and prayers are for all the family at this most difficult time. Blessings, Ken and Sylvia Gould, Tipton, Iowa
Jon was my teacher, my colleague, my co-author, and most importantly my friend. As long as I live I will be thankful for the privilege of knowing and working with him.
My condolences to the family. Jon was my uncle, and though I hadn’t spent time with him since I was a child I will always remember him fondly. Thanks to Facebook, we were able to connect more recently and catch up with all the family happenings. I was so happy to see his continual passion for music. I will miss our little FB connection. I’m looking forward to seeing him again in eternity ❤️
We had the privilege of meeting Jon and Judy many years ago on Isla Mujeres where we perform every January and February for the past 20 years. Jon approached us after he heard our 1st set at El Patio and said he wished he could sit in. We knew that owner Domingo loved jazz and bass and had one in the back. We got it out and Jon joined in to make the music better. He was great. The crowd loved it. The four of us always enjoyed each other's company, making music and spirited conversations about music, jazz, the world, and education. He is everything a man should be: strong, intelligent, gentle, caring and peaceful. He loved you all and we will miss him. Enjoy all the glorious memories of a fine man as we surely will.
My deepest condolences. I am saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. Cryer. May he rest in peace.
