Obituary of John Carl Ripperton
John C. Ripperton; 77 passed away November 25, 2020 after many years of battling COPD.
John was born August 22, 1943; the Son of Carl and Minta (Edwards) Ripperton of Onslow, Iowa. John graduated from Midland High School in 1961. John enlisted in the United States Navy in 1962; Serving 4 years where he was a Radioman 2nd Class on the USS New during the Vietnam War.
After getting out of the United States Navy John worked various jobs and went to school at UNI where he met Janice Tasker; they married in December 1972 and divorced in 1997. Before getting married in 1972 John took over running the family grocery store (Rip’s Cash Grocery in Onslow, Ia). In 1978 John began working for K-mart until 1994. John then went to work at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City, Ia until his retirement in 2008.
John was very active throughout most his life. He enjoyed going fishing, bowling, playing baseball/softball and golf. He loved to travel and was known in the family as a “history buff”. He also enjoyed planting a garden and going to his children’s sporting events. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a Proud Father, Grandfather and Brother.
John was a great man with an extremely kind soul, loving heart and infectious smile.
John is survived by his three children; Morgan(Sarah) of Coralville, Justin of Hills and Megan (Madison Mitchell) of Marion, five grandchildren; Meghan, Kaylub, Alyssa, Kolby and Everlee, two sisters; Sharon Howie and Joyce(Jay) Oehlerich and his Aunt Alice Beckham. John was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Forrest, Lonnie and Chuck.
John’s remains have been donated to the University of Iowa for scientific purposes. Family Graveside Services will be held at a later time.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Sunday, August 22, 2021, from 1 to 5 pm at Colonial Lanes Bowling Alley in Iowa City.
John’s family would like to thank all of the Staff at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa for their support and care of their Dad/Grandpa.
