Walt Viering
1944 - 2021
Condolences
It warms my heart to see so many old friends names here. Allow me to lend my voice to theirs. Walt, Sue, Michaela, Ben, Alex, Megan, Mindy, Andy (I didn’t get to spend time with the other brothers and sisters) provided such a wonderful, safe and magical place for my sister and I. And I am eternally grateful for that time.
Consider this a warm hug from afar to the entire Viering family. Sue, Walt and the kids were a second family for Alexis and Regan Taber during their Jefferson School years. They always enjoyed their time in your lively home and are better people as the result of your influence.

My sister, Alexis, and I (Regan) were also some of the lucky kids to be babysat at the house on Mississippi Blvd in the early to mid 80s. Walt, was a kind man and always friendly to the extra kids in the house. I’m sorry for your loss, Vierings. Hang in there.
I am a better person for having met Walt. When he came to the All Saints Food Pantry to donate produce and anything he
could buy for a good deal we all looked forward to it. We came to love him and were blessed to hear him tell stories of his
family and why he felt called to give. I would love to ask him about his health and he loved telling me about it. He will
forever be in my heart and many others at the Food Pantry.

Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you something to drink? Very truly I tell you,
when you did it to one of the least of these people, my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me.
This is Jennifer (Ryan) Easton. I had the pleasure of being babysat by the Vierings when I was a little girl. I was also blessed to have Mr. Viering as a principal in elementary school. He was a wonderful, helpful man who touched so many lives... he will be missed. I am proud to say that I am now a second grade teacher in Davenport - following his lead.
It's impossible to forget someone who gave us so much to remember. Miss you so much.
Sue
Dear Family of Walt, We send our sincere sympathy for your loss. Walt was energy personified. We knew him when he served at Walcott school. There was never a job or activity that he wasn’t “all in” making sure it was a success. For me, ((Louise) personally, he helped me prepare for an interview when I was applying for a teaching position after being out of the field for awhile.I will be forever grateful for his help. I got the position and taught there until I retired.
May your many memories bless you as you remember him.

I did not know Walt well. I worked with him briefly with the homebound student program. I could tell he was a warm caring human who loved to teach children. I appreciate all the years of caring for the students in Davenport Schools.
My favorite memory of Uncle Walt (besides the call for going to the bathroom before your crew would depart in the cool station wagon with seats that faced each other) was when he paid me to eat a pickled herring. It was only a dollar or two, and I was already WELL into adulthood, but it made me finally eat one! Though I don't think I became a good Viering who loved them. :)
Sending my prayers and love to you all.
Sue and Family,
Walt's innate kindness, warmth, and humor meant so much to Andy and Alexis. They have wonderful memories of their time with the Vierings.
My sympathy to you all upon the loss of this good man.

I met Walt at all Saints. It was always great helping him unload groceries. He had a big heart. He will be missed.
Walt and I collaborated on home instruction to educate kids with some of the toughest mental health and life experience issues you can imagine. He was ALWAYS positive and hopeful about our lessons for each individual child. May recalling his life's stories bring family and friends comfort.
Walt was a blessing to many in the QC community but especially to the families at the All Saints Lutheran Church food pantry! Walt was a weekly presence at the pantry donating fresh fruit & veggies and any grocery special buys he could find and share! We enjoyed the stories he shared, his smile and enthusiastic personality! Sending prayers in love to his family as he will be missed!
I worked with Walt in several “layers” of education. He was my assistant principal at Walcott. What I admired most about him was his willingness to think through ideas with me; no rush to a yes or no. I’d approach him with an idea and then we’d both agree to think about it and meet again to decide. He was principal at Wilson when my children were students there. Finally, I worked with him with home-schooled students. His passion for helping students, as well as for his family were unparalleled.
I was lucky enough to work with Walt and got a chance to see what a great man he was. I will never forget the warmth his smile brought to the office each and every day. I want to extend my sympathies to family.
Sincerely,
Renny Ratti
An amazing person who truly loved children. We met Walt at Walcott Middle School. I remember one of their children went in to sales and my husband was in sales too. That young man sold me a product from the back of my car as I waited for our daughter at tennis practice. He was persistent. My husband and I always wondered what happened to him. Sue thank you for sharing your husband with the whole community. He really cared . Wishing him PEACE . Martha Neal
I remember him from H.M. Perry or was it Walcott School? In the mid 1990's. One of the memories I have of him was that he was singing Nuttin for Christmas to the Students just before we were dismissed for Christmas break. He was really a good principal and good to the staff. I wish there was more people like him in the school system as I moved through the grades. He really did seem to like his job and did it well. May he rest in peace.
My heartfelt condolences to your family. Walt and I go back many years, from working together at Chamberlain in Waterloo to teaching together at JB Young. We also took night classes together to further our education and cash in on the GI Bill for veterans. Bob Dalton
Sue and Family - Heartfelt condolences to you at the loss of Walt. May his memory warm your hearts as you grieve the loss.
Sue - my sincere condolences to you and family. My most recent memory of Walt was when I assisted him in carrying in his delivery to Cafe on Vine. He was such a giving person, even as it became more difficult due to his health. May He Rest In Peace !
