Obituary of Walt Viering
Walt Viering of North Liberty, Iowa, formerly of Davenport, passed away October 24, 2021, at University of Iowa Hospitals.
Walt was a teacher to his core, serving Davenport Schools as a teacher, Associate Principal, and Principal. He loved interacting with students and staff alike and taught with compassion, caring and humor. After retiring as Principal, Walt spent several years as Home Instructor working with students who were unable to attend school in person. He gave more than 100% to these students and their families and loved being a part of their lives.
Walt was a very giving person, whether with his time, his resources, or his attention. Many times, he quietly bought a coat, shoes, or school supplies for a child in need. He took great pleasure in shopping for the food pantry or cooking food for Café on Vine. He took real joy in helping people overcome obstacles when he could.
As a father, he was awesome! Whether playing catch, cooking Sunday dinner, making up bedtime stories on the fly, or just listening he gave each child a sense of being loved. He always took pleasure in each child’s achievements, and they felt the pride he had in who they were as individuals.
Walt had a larger- than- life personality with a great sense of humor. He was joyful, intelligent, and always enthusiastic about learning.
He is survived by his wife, Sue, and their children, Michaela, Alex (Regina), Ben (Jessie), Andy, (Rhonda) Megan, Mindy (Matt Best), James and Ossie and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Meta Lage, Linda Marlow, Ilene Cook, Helen Hinders and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Augusta Viering of Beaman, Iowa and by his brothers, Fred, and Warren.
A private family service will be held at a future date.
