Obituary of Don Longhurst

Don Longhurst, age 73, passed away on January 30, 2023, at home under the care of Iowa City Hospice. A gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, Feb 4 from 4-6 PM at Gay & Ciha Funeral Home with thoughts shared at 5:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County or to the charity of your choice. Don was born July 11, 1949, in Muscatine, Iowa to Frances and Vera Longhurst. He was a graduate of Muscatine High School and University of Northern Iowa. Don was a teacher and coach for twelve years, and then worked in financial services for the remainder of his career. After living in Grinnell for 34 years, Don and his wife Sue moved to Iowa City after retiring in 2008. In retirement, Don enjoyed playing pickleball, gardening, reading, Hawkeye sports, attending his grandchildren’s activities, and spending time with family. He and Sue enjoyed frequent trips to Colorado and he loved being outdoors regardless of the weather. Don was an excellent cook and baker, and had frequent requests for his excellent desserts. Most important to Don was his family, and he was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife Sue; children Kelly (Jim) Weston, Ann (Jeremy) Showers, and Michael Longhurst; grandchildren Mariah and Dominic Weston, Sam Showers, and Damon Longhurst; his brother, Ron (Phyllis), sister-in-law, Diane Kennedy; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers-in-laws Francis (Sharon) Schmidthuber and Leo Kennedy.
